February 26, 2026
The morning session will be the Safety Table Top Drill Training with UNLPPC.
It will go from 8 AM to Noon. The following is a description of the course:
ESU 13 is hosting a Tabletop Safety Drill Training in partnership with the University of Nebraska–Lincoln Public Policy Center (UNL PPC). This training is designed to provide school leaders and staff with a structured opportunity to examine and strengthen their Emergency Operations Plans through guided discussion and scenario-based analysis.
Participants will work through complex, realistic school safety scenarios to systematically review existing procedures, communication protocols, decision-making processes, and interagency coordination. The tabletop format allows teams to identify strengths, uncover gaps, and clarify roles in a low-stress, collaborative environment—without the pressure of a live drill.
The overarching goal of this training is to promote meaningful dialogue and regional collaboration among Nebraska Panhandle schools. By learning alongside colleagues and sharing perspectives, participants will build a stronger, more coordinated approach to school safety that supports preparedness, consistency, and effective response across districts.
_________________________________________________________
The afternoon training, EOP Review and Q&A with Regional Emergency Management Leaders, will take place from 1:00–3:30 PM.
This session will be a presentation led by county and regional emergency management leaders from across the Nebraska Panhandle. Presenters will outline available emergency management resources, response networks, roles, and scopes of service, with a focus on how schools engage with local and regional agencies during emergency situations.
Following the presentation, the session will shift into an interactive question-and-answer format where participants may ask specific questions related to emergency response, school safety, and their district or school Emergency Operations Plan (EOP). Emergency management leaders will provide direct, scenario-based feedback and guidance tailored to the unique needs of Panhandle schools.
This will be a collaborative, roll-up-your-sleeves working session designed to support schools in refining their Emergency Operations Plans. Participants will have the opportunity to learn from one another, share and borrow best practices across districts, and receive practical, actionable input to strengthen coordination, procedures, and overall emergency preparedness.

CPI Refresher Description:
CPI de-escalation and safety
intervention training from Crisis Prevention Institute. This course focuses on
care, welfare, safety, and security for school staff and students. You will
learn:
How to identify behaviors that could lead to a crisis
How to effectively respond to those behaviors
How to use verbal and nonverbal techniques to resolve a crisis
How to recognize your own fear and anxiety
How to utilize safety interventions during moments of crisis
Successful use of CPI training
as part of a comprehensive crisis intervention plan can defuse challenging
behavior before an incident escalates to a crisis. Successful implementation
leads to a change in organizational culture, a change in adult professional
behavior, and a change in staff relationships with students.
The “Refresher” option is
available to participants who have been certified by ESU 13 trainers in the
last 2 years and who have a Blue Card that has not expired.
This course consists of online
modules and in-person training. Registration will close 1 week prior to the
in-person date to allow participants time to complete pre-requisite modules.
Modules MUST be completed before the in-person training day in order to be
certified.
Lunch is not provided. Cost is
$40/participant.

March 5, 2026
The Reading Rally is an exciting reading competition
designed for students in grades 3 through 8. It fosters a
love for literature and teamwork as participants engage in a
challenging battle of book knowledge. Below are the details
and directions for the competition.
Divisions:
3rd - 4th Grade Division
5th - 6th Grade Division
7th - 8th Grade Division
Team Formation:
Each school forms teams of four students. Teams can be of
mixed grade levels but they will compete at the highest
grade level of the team members.
Schools may have up to two additional members on a team,
but substitutions must be made between rounds.
Schools can enter as many teams as the ESU (Educational
Service Unit) can accommodate.
Competition Format:
The competition consists of five rounds.
Each round has ten questions.
Questions are displayed on large projectors throughout the
room.
Each team uses one computer and must have only the
Google Form answer key open.
The correct answer is always the title of a book from the
provided reading list.
Each question provides multiple-choice options, listing all
possible book titles.
Teams have one minute to submit their answer.
Teams may ask the proctor to repeat a question at the end
of each round.
Once an answer is submitted, it cannot be changed.
Scoring:
Scores are calculated after each round.
The competition is not timed based on speed, meaning the
first team to answer does not receive extra points.
The Reading Rally provides an opportunity for students to
showcase their comprehension skills, work collaboratively,
and enjoy friendly competition while celebrating their love
for reading!
