DescriptionThe simple view of reading says that if students can decode words and understand the meaning of the words they read, they will comprehend what they read. In this session we will learn what “decoding” is and what that looks like during core instruction in the early grades and also how to address decoding with striving readers in upper grades who need intervention. We’ll also look at how to increase word knowledge. Time will also be spent practicing a few strategies for improving overall comprehension.

Participants will have the opportunity to examine their core and intervention materials to begin thinking about what to keep doing, what to start doing, and maybe what to stop doing.

This course is appropriate for all teachers in grades k-8.
