Anxiety in the Classroom-Dr. Pamela Brezenski; ESU 13 Special Services Director & Dr. Katie Carrizales; ESU 13 Behavioral Mental Health Director
There are many different kinds of anxiety, which is one of the reasons it can be hard to detect in the classroom. This session will explore the neurological component of anxiety in the classroom, teach you how to identify it, and offer practical strategies to help you support students in your classrooms.
11:30-12:30     Co-Teaching in Real Life- Erin Pfister, Special Education Coordinator, Lincoln Public Schools, Joanna Fineran
Co-teaching benefits teachers by increasing their professional efficacy and giving teachers opportunities to learn from each other.  All students benefit socially from a co-taught classroom and students with disabilities benefit academically, however teacher compatibility, a vague definition of roles and time to plan are major roadblocks to effective co-teaching.  Presented by former co-teaching partners, Erin Pfister and Joanna Fineran will share simple, effective, concrete strategies for initiating a co-teaching relationship and planning well to increase student achievement.

12:45-1:45       Addressing Dyslexia within MTSS- Rhea Hochstein, Nebraska Department of Education, Special Education Consultant, Amy Rhone, Nebraska Department of Education, Assistant Director of Special Education
Learning to read is one of the most essential achievements for children.  However, for many students, reading is labor intensive, frustrating, and challenging.  This session will describe the characteristics of struggling readers and students verified with learning disabilities, including dyslexia.  A review of recent legislative bill 1052, will provide a definition and information in understanding dyslexia, assessment, misconceptions, and effective instruction. Through an MTSS framework, this presentation will demonstrate how schools can build an evidence-based instruction and intervention model where all students can succeed.  Resources on screening, progressing monitor, evidence-based interventions, and problem-solving will be shared.
