Digital Connections: Teaching in the 21st Century ~ May 29, 2012

This is a proposed 3 credit hour course which will be "on-line" using the ESU Moodle system--and culminate with your attendance at the Digital Boot Camp in July. Beth Still will be available at ESU#13, 4215 Avenue I in the lobby on May 29th to answer questions and help you get started with the on-line class.   Technology has fundamentally changed the way we communicate, share, and learn. Managing, organizing, and working with information is very different in the digital age. Using the International Society for Technology in Education’s National Education Technology Standards for Teachers as a framework, participants will be introduced to a variety of Web 2.0 tools that are widely used to teachers across the world to help them become better organized and more efficient. Three-quarters of the student activity in this course will occur in an online format. The course content will be delivered through Moodle. The online component contains fifteen lessons that will each take approximately two hours to complete. At the conclusion of each lesson, the student will write a reflective blog post over what they have learned. Students will be encouraged to visit and comment on the blogs of their peers.
   Fifteen hours of face-to-face instruction will take place on July 25 and 26 in Scottsbluff at the John N. Harms Advanced Technology Center. Instructors will lead sessions and discussions which will be based on the ISTE NETS for teachers. You will:
1.      Design and develop digital-age learning experiences while inspiring student learning and creativity by learning how to share, create, and collaborate using digital tools. Examples include posting to a blog, organizing information using documents on the cloud, creating an introduction to a lesson using a digital storytelling application, recording a screencast, and exploring the benefits of using a learning management system to help adapt to the needs of every student.
2.      Engage in professional growth and leadership by explore the benefits of becoming a networked teacher by connecting with other educators on various social networking platforms including Twitter and Nings, contribute a lesson to the group by editing a community wiki, examine a variety of digital resources by exploring several resource sharing blogs.
3.      Model digital-age work and learning while promoting and modeling digital citizenship and responsibility by learning about several ways to use digital tools to communicate and collaborate by editing a shared Google Doc, sharing and organizing digital resources using Evernote and Diigo, and managing flow of content using an RSS reader and Google Alerts.    This course requires that you set up accounts for a variety of web tools including: Gmail account (if you are at a school in the ESU13 service region please use your school Gmail/Google account. If you don’t know your login credentials please contact your IT department to obtain them.), VoiceThread, Twitter, Ning, Skype (also must download to computer) or Google Video Chat (Must download Google Talk) , Evernote and Diigo.

Cost: CSC graduate credit (pending approval) is $620.55 for residents. Non residents are $1135.80. There is a one time charge of $15.00 for studnets new to CSC. Information: This 3 graduate hour college credit course is offered by Chadron State College and will be taught on-line by Dr. Shafiq Rahman. The course will start the first week of June and be open for about 3-4 weeks. This class is designed to help area teachers meet requirements for an ESL endorsement and will be accepted by Wayne State College. The course has a waiting list with priority going to teachers already started in the ESL endorsement cohort. Open enrollment may be available after May 1st. Course Description: This special topics class explores not only the diversity and cross-cultural issues but also untangles their histories and their relations with social contexts and power. Although we will learn practical tips so that we can survive in a cross-cultural environment, our objective will remain broad-based: To have a critical understanding of cross-cultural relations so that we can build meaningful and mutually respectful and functional relations across cultural divides, which is becoming a necessity in the interconnected global world. The knowledge that students will gain in this class can be utilized in strategic planning on diversity and cross-cultural issues.

This is a fully online course. There will be no face-to-face class meetings for this class. All the instructions will be conducted online through e-College. You will have to have a username and password to access CSC e-College.

Eight assignments, eight discussion forums, twelve quizzes, one midterm, one final exam, and a final paper constitute the total grades for the class.

Dates: June 4 - the end of June

Cost: Tuition will be paid to CSC for three credit hours--approximately $620.55.

Math 800T: Mathematics as a Second Language
This course helps teachers align instruction with the new Nebraska standards and the new Common Core standards in mathematics by focusing on the development of "habits of mind of a mathematical thinker". The approach is to understand arithmetic (number) and (introductory) algebra as a means of communicating mathematical ideas, and will stress a deep understanding of the basic operations of arithmetic, as well as the interconnected nature of arithmetic, algebra and geometry relating to the grades 3-7 curriculum.

Description: This course will be delivered using a blended learning model. The first day (June 5 will be a face-to-face meeting at ESU 13 in Scottsbluff. The remainder of the course activities will be completed online. The initial day (June 5) will be designed to generate accounts in a variety of applications that will be used to create and share information throughout the entire course. Week one activities will include creating and posting blogs and podcasts. Participants will continue to add posts to their blog throughout the course. During week two participants will create and modify sharing settings to generate collaborative online documents. Week three will require participants to assemble and actively participate in an online learning network, and use a variety of online tools to create digital products. The final touches will be compiled during the fourth week. Participants will use Mahara to create an e-Portfolio of artifacts to demonstrate their mastery of all course content, as well as generating a plan for student use in their classroom

Positive Behavior Interventions and Effective Strategies ~ June 06, 2012 (2 days)

Description: Dr. Laura Riffel will provide two days of intensive training to school teams with their school behavior planning and structures for meeting student needs.

Behavior which impedes learning is of utmost concern to educators, parents, pediatricians, psychologists, support staff and family members. Dr. Riffel has found proactive and positive interventions to be of great benefit for children. There are three levels of support in School-wide PBIS. Positive Behavior Support is not a program, it is a system change process used by schools to build a framework for incorporating proactive strategies into their schools.
The first level, universal level, of support provided by PBIS is with students and teachers in the classroom. The second level of support is for targeted groups of individuals who might need booster shots to make it through the day successfully when universal interventions do not work. A big part of secondary support is through a program called Check-In/Check-Out. Tertiary support is designed for those students who fail to respond to universal and secondary support. These are the students who need intensive support in order to be successful. The PBIS framework will bring systematic proactive strategies to schools.

This PBIS training is funded by the Se-CIP Grant.

Bounus: Twenty people from ESU13 will be Selected to receive $120 for the training.

Description: Professors from the University of Nebraska, Lincoln will be instructing this course Number Theory and Cryptology 806T. The course is offered in Scottsbluff, June 18-22, 2012, 8:00 – 5:00, ESU 13 HATC 189. The target audience is teachers of grades 6-9.

Math 806T: Number Theory and Cryptology for Middle Level Teachers
This course focuses on basic number theory results which are needed to understand the number theoretic RSA cryptography algorithm (an encryption algorithm which is in use today to secure information sent via the internet). The course emphasizes connections to middle level mathematics and promotes a deep understanding of the integers and their properties. Elementary methods for encoding and decoding are introduced to elucidate the nature of cryptology. These methods are readily adaptable as enrichment activities for students in grades 6-9.

Description: Dr. Ed Foy, Writing Coordinator, Nebraska Department of Education, will provide training for administrators, assessment coordinators, curriculum directors and teachers of Grade 4 on the new NeSA Writing Assessment. NMPDS Elementary Mathematics Academy (Grades K-6) ~ July 12, 2012 (2 days)

Description: Elementary Mathematics Academy (Grades K-6) will be held during the 2012-2013 school year. This series of workshops is available for Elementary (K-6) teachers, Special Education teachers, and Title I teachers. Priority points will be given to those from high needs districts; those assigned to SPED and Title I; and those whose students are struggling with achievement on NeSA Mathematics. This professional development series will overview more than 100 new lessons, games, resources, and instructional activities to provide motivating hands-on instruction for elementary students. Activities are aligned to NCTM Focal Points and Nebraska State Mathematics Standards. In addition, the workshops will provide affective classroom strategies blending mathematics and other subject areas. Selected participants are expected to attend all sessions for their region. More information, including registration materials will be sent in March. There is no cost for these workshops. Description: Nebraska BLAST! is a collaborative agreement between the 21st Century Community Learning Center program (21st CCLC) and the National Aeronautic and Space Administration (NASA). Nebraska BLAST! is a unique opportunity for 21st CCLC staff, teachers from 21st CCLC buildings, and middle school students to learn from and with each other through engaging hands-on learning opportunities focused on NASA/STEM content.

Nebraska BLAST! is a four-year program for certified teachers, afterschool staff, and students entering or presently in grades four through eight. Forty hours of professional development are delivered regionally, throughout the summer and school year, to school day teachers and afterschool staff by STEM content experts. NASA/STEM curriculum is taught primarily in the afterschool setting for 25 hours during the school year and 40 hours the following summer. STEM education includes the content areas of science, technology, engineering and mathematics. This initiative will also include literacy through a project-based approach to teaching.

The program welcomes all students participating in 21st CCLC programs, and intentionally targets students typically underserved and underrepresented in STEM career fields.

DATES and LOCATIONS: The initial training will be held at Chadron Middle School on July 23-24 for northern eligible schools. Other panhandle schools will attend in Scottsbluff at ESU#13 HATC A-113 on July 25 and 26. On July 27th there will be an optional 3rd day for 15 certified teachers in the region at the ESU site.

Description: Calling all classroom teachers! Escape the summer heat and spend two exhilarating days sharpening your digital skills. This boot camp is based on the International Society for Technology in Educations technology standards for teachers. You will learn strategies about how to get the most out of digital tools from some of the most brilliant and innovative educators in the country. Join them as they take you on a digital journey which will showcase examples of collaboration, creativity, and networking. Google Apps, Twitter, Diigo, and VoiceThread will all make multiple appearances throughout the two day camp. The camp is co-sponsored by ESU#13, HATC/WNCC and NDE.

In addition to E188-189, sessions will also be held in the Plex and the computer labs at WNCC HATC building.

This course is part of a series of courses leading to an endorsement in English As a Second Langauge from Wayne State College. It will examine programs providing appropriate education for ESL. Curriculum will be evaluated relative to the research in second language acquistion. Modules on formal assessment for placement and growth and informal assessment will also be provided. The first classes will be held on July 30 and 31, classes will then switch to Monday evenings from 4:00-8:00. Contact SOAR for latest details for this 3graduate hours credit.

Crisis Prevention Institute Inc. (CPI) Nonviolent Crisis Intervention Training Program Four-Day Instructor Certification Program

Description:
The cornerstone of CPI since 1980, this program is considered the worldwide standard for crisis prevention and intervention training. With a core philosophy of providing for the Care, Welfare, Safety, and SecuritySM of everyone involved in a crisis situation, the program’s proven strategies give human service providers and educators the skills to safely and effectively respond to anxious, hostile, or violent behavior while balancing the responsibilities of care. The first day of the program there is emphasis on early intervention of behaviors. The second day of the program covers physical intervention principles. During the third and fourth days, participants will learn how to master the intervention techniques they have learned so they are able to teach them to staff at their organization. In addition, participants are taught how to effectively conduct and tailor the Nonviolent Crisis Intervention® program for in-house training.

ESU#13 is coordinating the training. Some school district personnel have already been selected. No additional registrations will be taken. ESU will also have staff members trained to serve the other schools. Following this CPI certification training, districts can contact ESU #13 for training at on site to meet district dates and staff needs.

Hospitality: Lunch will be on your own. Coffee and rolls will be provided.

Direct Instruction Coach/Trainer Series ~ August 06, 2012 (2 days)

Description: Minatare Schools is developing direct instruction trainers as part of their PLAS SIG project. They are willing to open this training series to other districts. Participants would gain advanced skills in supporting classroom teachers with implementation of the direct instruction programs and would be able to deliver training on those programs. The participants would have the background skills needed to be “lead teachers”, coaches, and/or “program trainers.”
Dates and Locations:
August 6-7, 2012 Data Focus   ESU#13 HATC. Instead of attending the current ESU#13 Reading Institute, these selected teachers would attend a two-day advanced training with an emphasis on learning how to utilize the weekly data from classroom teachers. They will explore how to analyze data for completion, how to interpret what the data is telling, and practice how to describe the problem. General interventions for support for typical issues will be trained.
          September 27-28, 2012 Intervention Focus   ESU#13 HATC , classroom visits. These two days will focus first on “within the program” interventions including setup, classroom management, environment, scheduling, locations, handling materials. Some practice will be provided on how to collect data and how to visit classes and observe to determine needs.
          June 3-4, 2013 Training Others in Direct Instruction ESU#13 HATC. These sessions will now focus on delivery of the direct instruction models to other teachers. Teachers will focus on the programs they have themselves taught, but skills can be used with other program levels.
          August 5-6-7, 2013. Supervised Teaching of DI Programs ESU#13 HATC. A two-three day (dates may vary slightly based on school calendars) Direct Instruction Reading Institute will be held similar to those held the last three years. Trainees help provide the training under direction of Deb Steely (and other area trainers) and earn right to train others on their own in their schools once have completed the supervised training successfully. This registration will be held later.
Audience:   Districts will self-select their potential participating teachers to become lead teachers/coaches/by selecting those with the highest evidence of teaching the program with program fidelity, awareness of student responses and engagement and student achievement. These participants also need to have the potential to be respected as trainers of adults. Excellent teachers with communication skills are ideal. Current reading coaches are encouraged to participate as part of district continuity and consistency to techniques. Some districts may decide to train grade level/program level team leaders or “go-to” teachers. . Other districts may develop a trainer for primary and another person with background in teaching DI for intermediate grades.

Cost: $400 for the series. This covers the first 6 days of training and lunches. (August and September 2012, and June 2013.) The final days in August, 2013, would be done at no charge to the participants as they would hopefully be co-teaching the annual Reading Institute with another already trained instructor under the supervision of Deb Steely.
College Credit: 3 hours pending CSC approval, additional cost.

*Correlation to the Reading Coaches Cadre: In adition to this training series, ESU#313 continues to support the are reading coaches cadre. Coaches are welcome to attend both the Cadre and the Trainer Series. Cadre begins on August 16, 2012 4:00-7:00 p.m. with Meralee Hoffelt on Side by Side Coaching. This is a 3.5 hour hands-on training conducted by Rick Welsh, creator of Framework for PC, in collaboration with Charlotte Danielson. Participants will learn how to use Framework for PC software to accomplish the following tasks: collect data during classroom observations; analyze data according to Danielson's Framework Process; evaluate staff using the Danielson's Rubric; provide evidential support for ratings; use ratings to plan staff development; and customize software for their own use. Description: Learn how to integrate reading and literacy into teaching core standards, classroom routines and behavior management through the READaSONG© strategy.
The READaSONG© strategy and materials, developed by Nancy Welsh, create numerous opportunities throughout the school day for integrating high frequency and sight word acquisition into the teaching of core curriculum. Nancy’s approach encourages dynamic student engagement, and it’s fun! During the workshop, Nancy will engage participants with dozens of examples of songs and student friendly charts which are the basis of the READaSONG strategy. She will also provide criteria for selecting or writing lyrics to create the charts. Teachers will leave the workshop with the skills to adapt the strategy to their own needs. Who should attend? K - 2 teachers and assistants, as well as other Early Childhood staff, including ESL, media specialists, music teachers, reading coaches, special education staff members and their administrators. Learn to enhance your use of K-1 Reading Mastery materials and techniques! Understanding the strengths and needs of any core reading program is what separates instructional implementers from instructional engineers. Learn research-based techniques to enhance and enrich the primary grade programs in this one-day workshop. Quality monitoring data collection practice, modeling for practice, modeling for practice sessions will be included. Two sessions October 9, 2012 and March 5, 2013 will potentiallay be held at a school site so coaches can practice in an actual classroom setting. The December session can be attended DL. About the Presenter: Dr. Erica Lembke is an associate professor in the Department of Special Education at the University of Missouri, a trainer for the National Center on Response to Intervention, and was formally secretary on the national board of the Division for Learning Disabilities. She is currently working on a federally funded IES grant to examine the use of handhelds to conduct mathematics progress monitoring and administer mathematics diagnostic interviews. Dr. Lembke has presented over 100 national/international and state presentations on the topics of progress monitoring and response to intervention.

NMPDS "Math Connections for the 21st Century Learner" (7-12) ~ September 24, 2012

Description: Nebraska Mathematics Professional Development Series (NMPDS) will be held during the 2012-2013 school year. The theme for 2012-2013 will be “Math Connections for the 21st Century Learner.” This series of workshops is available for Middle/High School (7-12) math teachers, Special Education teachers, and Title I teachers. Priority points will be given to those from high needs districts; those assigned to SPED and Title I; and those whose students are struggling with achievement on NeSA Mathematics. This professional development series will focus on the following: NeSA Standards and C. C. Instruction, STEM Integration, Networking Best Practice & Research NCTM Process Standards, Data Analysis, Geometry, Algebra, Probability.

In addition, the workshops will provide effective classroom strategies blending mathematics and other subject areas. Selected participants are expected to attend all sessions for their region. More information, including registration materials will be sent in March. There is no cost for these workshops. BMIT Business, Marketing, Information Tech Standards Wkshop ~ October 10, 2012

Last year over 300 BMIT teachers attended the fall workshop. This year receive the new course standards for Information Technology, Arts/AV Technology and Communications, Hospitality and Tourism and recommended middle-level business and technology courses. Bonnie Sibert and Bev Newton of NDE are partnering with Parterships for Innovation (PFI) and postsecondary educators to offer these top-notch professional development opportunities. Please bring one copy of your business, marketing and information technology course offerings (course description and syllabi/outcomes.) Technical assistance on the revised Programs of Study will provide guidance for staff to align their coursework with the new standards. All secondary and post secondarty business, marketing and information technology teachers as well as preservice business education college students and studnet teachers are encouraged to particiapte. Guidance counselors, administrtors and or curriculum specialists are welcome to attend! Description: GEON Consultant, Tara Dunn, has contacted National Geographic Society and has arranged to have the GIANT floor map of ASIA brought to the panhandle of Nebraska in celebration of Geography Week. The map and teaching materials will be at ESU HATC E-188/189 for three days. During that time teachers may schedule to bring their classes to use the map. Tara will lead the learning activities aappropriate for the grade level for 45 minute sessions using the assistance of the classroom teachers. Space is available on a first-come basis. Pre-registration is required for student sessions that are to be held each day at these times:

Saxon Math Data-Driven Instruction (RTI) ~ October 22, 2012

Description: How do we address the three tiers of Response to Intervention in our schools? How can we collect and document the proper data to determine student weaknesses and areas of need to place students in the proper tier? How can we create a prescriptive plan for each and every student linked to Saxon Reteaching materials and additional supportive Saxon Math materials? These questions and more will be addressed in this session about using data-driven instructional decisions.

This session is designed as an overview of the Response to Intevention tiers and the proper use of the Saxon Math program. Best practice says the core program should meet the needs of 80% of our students. Participants will explore and learn about the process for supporting all three tiers of RTI using the Adaptations materials aligned to the Saxon Math program. The consultant will demonstrate the methods used to monitor student progress as well as the process used to design a prescriptive plan for each student based on their needs.

Outcomes for the Workshop:

Be able to develop a prescriptive plan for each student based on their needs determined using Saxon Math data
Determine the Saxon Math adaptations and Reteaching materials to use to address each student's needs
Understand how to use the Saxon Math assessments and tools to monitor student progress from one tier to another
Understand the purpose and importance of the Adaptation component of the Saxon Math program

Description:

Instructional coaches, department chairs, curriculum coordinators and interested teachers are invited to work together to increase their mathematical knowledge and skills in researched based instruction and implementation, data analysis, coaching and implementation. Model lessons that focus on design and delivery to increase student motivation and engagement will be explored. The goal of this cadre is to positively impact student achievement and increase leadership capacity in participating schools.

Participants are encouraged to register for all the sessions in the series which include:
October 29, 2012
November 29, 2012
January 29, 2013
February 28, 2013

Hospitality:
A beverage and a snack will be provided.

Cost:
$5:00

Location:
ESU 13 HATC E-188-189
DL will be available via the bridge. It will be the sites responsibility to dial

Description: All ESU #13 Schools are eligible to attend! Visit the City of Gering's Landfill plus learn about the effects of trash on animals, air, land, and our water supply.

Trip Through Time ~ April 15, 2013 (2 days)

Kindergarten students will visit the North Platte Valley Museum to meet volunteers who share activities involving tools, toys, prairie animals, and tales of the past. Students will wash clothes on a scrub board and skip a rope they actually make themselves.

Students will participate in the following sessions during their visit:

Tour a Union Pacific caboose, a jail, a soddy, and a fully furnished log cabin.
Use an antique water pump.
Wash clothes in an antique wooden washing machine.
Play with antique toys.
Learn about prairie animals.
Participate in a one-room schoolhouse setting.
Learn about a general store.
Watch a printing press in action.
Shell and grind corn using antique farm equipment.
