Primary ContactSOAR Contact
DescriptionIn an interactive combination of lecture and activity, participants will focus on affective and cognitive aspects of word learning. The overarching goal is to develop vocabulary (and ultimately comprehension). This goal is realized when teachers focus on motivational variables as well as skills and content. We will: Consider ways to kindle interest and awareness in words, phrases, sentences, and language in general; Consider ways to help each student develop a rational for learning; Explore ways to help students value the benefits of a rich vocabulary; Practice teaching new words by integrating phonics with spelling and semantics and morphology (i.e. structural analysis of word parts); Explore the most essential aspects of explicit vocabulary instruction; Analyze words to determine which are most "worthy" of teaching time; Participate in cognitively engaging and memorable word study.
